Homemade Pop tarts by Custom Taste
After seeing what felt like hundreds of "make your own pop tarts" recipes on Pinterest I decided to gives this a go. I had recently made some Slow Cooker Apple Pie Filling and needed something to put it in. I also needed a quick breakfast item in case Mr. CT and I overslept and he needed something to grab before dashing out the door. I say dashing because he is so very dashing :). 

Shopping List
  • 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 Cup All Purpose Flour
  • 3 TBSP Room Temp Unsalted Butter
  • 1/4 Cup + 2 TBSP Ice Water
  • 1/2 TSP Salt
  • 2 TSP Milled Flax Seed
  • 1 TSP Honey
  • Enough Apple Filling (or filling of your choice) for all pop-tarts

Hardware
Mixing Bowl
Mixer Paddle Attachment
Zip Top Bag or Saran Wrap
Baking Sheet
Silicon Mat or Aluminium Foil
Roller
Pastry/Pizza Cutter
Fork
Time  2 Hours 15 Minutes
Prep 1 Hour 30 Minutes
Cook 25 Minutes Per Batch
Yield 8 Pop-tarts
Time To Get Baking!!!
Mix together milled flax seed, the flours, and salt

Slowly cut in the butter
Once the butter has been blended in add in the honey
Slowly pour the ice water into the mixing bowl until the dry ingredients start to come together

Roll out onto a minimally floured surface and form into a ball
Place ball in a zip-top bag and place in fridge for 1 hour

After one hour is up remove from bag and place on lightly floured surface
Cut in half and set one half to the side
Roll out until 12 inches by 12 inches

Cut to get pieces 4 inches by 6 inches
Place 1 or 2 TSP Apple Filling in the middle of half of the pastry pieces

Once done lay another pastry piece on top
Using the fork pinch down the edges with the tines of the fork

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
Grease* your baking surface and place the pastries careful onto the baking sheet
Bake each batch for 25 minutes

Serving
1 pop-tart eaten however you'd like

Storing and Reheating
Let cool enough to handle before placing a storage container. Store in fridge for up to 2 weeks or in freezer until needed. Reheat in oven of microwave until fully cooked.
