Sweet Filled Steamed Buns

Sweet Filled Steamed Buns by Custom taste
Compared to the fruit filled pies you can buy at gas stations that give more to be desired and make you feel gross afterwards, these are a miracle. The low calorie steam bun filled with the strawberry-pineapple filling, steamed in a pot and served with the remaining filling on top are perfect for mornings that you need energy to get moving. A fried fruit pie connoisseur we know, changed his ways after sampling one of our scrumptious sweet, yet tart, treat.

1 tsp baking soda

Baking mat
Rolling pin
Large pot
Steam plate
Cabbage leaves (or other steam friendly material)

Time 45 minutes (if you keep the Chinese Steam Buns as dough and in the freezer, and the filling in the fridge. We suggest making it ahead of time)
Prep 30 Minutes
Cooking 15 Minutes (per batch)
Yield 10 steam buns

Banana Ice Cream

Like many others we have a love-hate relationship when it comes to fresh bananas. You first buy them and they are yellow and delicious looking, and almost as a cruel joke the very next day (it seems like the next day at least) they are brown and falling apart in which you, with a heart just as bruised as the bananas, toss them into the trash. Well, we found the solution! This ice cream recipe is great for brown-to black bananas on their last leg. Serve this at breakfast and watch your friends and family (most likely the younger ones) freak out in excitement. This post lists two varieties: Plain and Cocoa-Nut

2-3 very ripe bananas*
1/2 cup almond milk
1 tbsp natural peanut butter
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp cocoa

Cutting board
Measuring cup and tbsp

Paper towel(s) or clean dishcloth

Prep 5 mintues /10 minutes

Strawberry-Pineapple Filling

Strawberry-Pineapple Filling by Custom TasteThe Sweet Tooth. You may have heard of it (of course you have), you might have a small one but a friend might have a large one. Instead of turning to the high in artificial sweeteners or over-processed sugar products, turn to your local grocery store produce aisle. This filling has a enough natural sweetness to make anyones sweet tooth happy without being over loaded in sugar. A certain husband we know was more than pleased when he got a taste.

1 tsp lime zest
1 juice of one small lime (2 tbsp)
3 tbs brown sugar
1 tsp un-flavoured gelatin
1/3 cup pineapple juice*
2/3 cup pineapple chunks*
1/2 cup chopped strawberries

Cutting board
Sharp knife
Small pot
Small mixing bowl
Measuring cup, tbsp, tsp

Time 45 minutes
Preparation 15 minutes

This recipe has far less cheese but with the added tomato soaked into the noodle, and the nutty,cheesy flavours of nutritional yeast, it helps this dish to be creamy and delicious without the added caloric intake.

5 Roma Tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 1/2 cup dry preferred noodles
6 cups water
1 cup almond milk*
1 tbs Nutritional Yeast*
1\4 cup cheddar cheese
2 tsp red pepper flakes
2 tsp salt
2 tsp pepper
2 tbs capers (optional)

Medium to large pot

Medium oven safe baking dish

Chinese Steam Buns

These classic buns are easy to prepare,a great way to add healthy crabs to any meal without added sugars or oils and very filling. The buns best when paired with soups, like a replace for the dumplings in chicken and dumplings, but you can make them a complete meal by adding your choice of savor or sweet fillings. Kid friendly and party friendly these buns will be a hit no matter who you are feeding them to.

1 tbsp active dry yeast*
2 tsp sugar
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees to 120 degrees)
1 1/2 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 water
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp baking powder
Asian Flare Spanish Spice Mix (optional)

1 mixing bowl
1 large pot with lid
1 steam tray
Wax paper, cabbage leaves or other steam friendly material*
Cooling area (plate, tray, rack, etc)
Cloth rag
Baking mat

Time 4 hrs
Preparation 3 1/2 hours
Cooking 30 minutes depending on size of buns
Yield 12-24 buns depending on desired size of buns

This salsa is a delicious way to get your daily vegetable intake without the added sugar and artificial ingredients you would otherwise get in most pre-packaged versions. The heat is not for the faint of heart, but easily modified to fit your desired spice level.

8 Roma tomatoes
8 Jalapenos*
1 Large white onion
5 Garlic cloves
2 tbs Vegetable Oil
1/4 cup Distilled vinegar
1 tsp Salt
1/2 cup fresh Cilantro (half a bushel)

Cutting board
Large mixing bowl
Oven safe pan (large enough to have one layer of vegetables)
Sharp knife
Measuring cup, tbsp and tsp

Time 40 minutes
Preparation 10 minutes
Cooking 30 minutes
Yield 3 cups and then some
