How To Store...Fresh Strawberries!!!

How To Store...Fresh Strawberries!!! by Custom Taste

For my first installment of "How To Store..." we are doing strawberries! It is strawberry season (well now the tail end of it) and strawberries have been on sale. So I got two pounds and decided to freeze one lb and the other pound I stored in the fridge for snacking. I remember once hearing that you could not freeze strawberries, but obviously that is not true. What is true is that cooked or chocolate covered strawberries are more difficult to freeze, so make sure to keep them as raw as possible.

Instant Oatmeal Muffins for Two

Instant Oatmeal Muffins for 2 by Custom Taste
Eating oatmeal almost everyday can get kind of dull, even if you love the stuff! Last month (or the month before) we got 5 boxes of Better Oats Organic Raw instant oatmeal because they were on sale, like 5 boxes for $5 on sale. We also got 4 different flavours. I saw this idea for using instant oatmeal for muffins on my May SRS Partner's website and decided to make it for breakfast one day, but personalize it and only make 2. I also used the cinnamon plum flavour. They were super filling and super delicious, definitely a great kick start to any busy morning. We topped them with a peanut butter whipped topping which I will be posting the  recipe to early next week. Enjoy!

Fruit and Veggie Wash

Before our "How To Store.." kick off post, I wanted to share our produce washes. Porous produce has to be treated differently from non-porous produce since porous produce (like strawberries) are much more fragile than non-porous (potatoes). I prefer the soak, rinse and dry method than the spray and scrub method. This is because I can get home from the grocery store, fill the sink or a bowl with water and vinegar, drop in the produce and continue putting groceries up without having to get my hands (and clothes) wet. I am all about any method that is hands off.

No need for any of that fancy produce wash or extra utensils making something so easy out to be such a show. These easy produce washes only need water, a sink or large bowl and some vinegar.

Yummy and big salad for lunch. I am coming off of a knee injury and today I get to start Insanity again so I want to make sure I am well fueled and ready to sweat. This salad was made with romaine lettuce, tomatoes, squash, bell pepper, carrots, cucumbers, boiled eggs and yummy homemade honey-hummus dressing. Wish me luck on my workout!

Honey-Hummus Dressing

Honey-Hummus Dressing by Custom Taste
We do not keep any dressing in our house unless we are going to be using it right away, also because we normally have ingredients to quickly make our own dressings. This is one of my favourites! I have always loved honey-mustard dressing but it can be loaded with fat and extra sugars. So, of course, I made my own. The hummus allows it to be creamy and easy to pour and the greek yogurt adds protein without adding fat, yummy!

May SRS: How To Make Homemade Gnocchi

For this month's Surprise Recipe Swap hosted by Hungrylittlegirl.com has to do with homemade gnocchi! I love homemade pasta and dumplings. It is always so fresh tasting (because it is fresh) and just overall beter compared to the store bought kind. So it was a no brainer when i saw this recipe for homemade gnocchi by Jennifer Sikora at jennifersikora.com. I REALLY appreciated that this recipe did not call for eggs and you could not even tell the difference. I kept with just the plain straight forward recipe but next time I will be making them a big more playful by adding spices and herbs. This is a great and easy gnocchi recipe that any beginner, or expert, would enjoy making. Jennifer is a blogger, wife and mom who has been blogging since 2007 and blogs about numerous amounts of topics, not just food and recipes, even those are the ones that I took great interest in. Obviously. She also has a wide repertoire for her recipes. So hop on over to her blog and like she says "pull up a chair and stay awhile".

Now time to get to the cooking!!! I cut the recipe in half since I was only cooking for two and it ended up being a perfect split.

"How To Store..." Kitchen Series

I will be starting a new series of "How To Store..." anything! Veggies, fruits, meats, cooked items, everything and anything related! Starting out as a more health conscious easter, I had a difficult time with finding the best way to store veggies or if I should put something in the freezer right away and what do I do after it is thawed. Of course all of these tricks and treats work best for us because of our living situation and our relationship with our groceries and food. However, I wanted to share all of these tricks and treats to help you all better store your food or expose you to new and different ways. Nothing wrong with expanding your knowledge! Look for the first post in the coming week!

Homemade Jalapeno Escabeche

Homemade Jalapeno Escabecha by Custom Taste
Since this recipe's "Food Foto" post got such a large audience I decided to post it earlier than planned. I am still allowing our escabeche to sit longer until trying it out but my father and his girlfriend tried it out and said it was great! They even said that the onions and carrots had a jalapeño kick to them. Perfect for us, since we LOVE spicy foods. So here is the recipe, not go make your own escabeche ASAP!

This is how dinner turned out last nice. Freaking delicious!! The name if these Russian ravilois she made is Pelmeni. They were astounding and so fresh. We ate a salad that consisted of lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. I wish I had been hungrier that is for sure!

We are in the midst of entertaining guests. Guests being my father and his girlfriend. She is Russian so we are getting some of her home cooking tonight! These are Russian dumplings stuffed with a beef and pork mixture. Super excited to try them and potentially make my own. She made close a hundred and fast! visitors

This food foto has a completely different flare than any of my previous. This stupendous and slightly weird looking haul was brough to us by my father who lives in Vietnam. It consists of an aged rice wine, 4 or 5 different coffees ( instant and regular), coconut candy, spiced dried beef, green tea, jasmine tea, artichoke tea ( yes I did say artichoke tea) and cashews still in the shell! I cannot wait to dive into these! What is the most unique gift someone has given to you?

Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl (egg-free) Whole Wheat Hot Cakes!(that was a mouthful) So I have a confession, I am a breakfast food addict. I have also realized I do not post enough breakfast recipes on here. That will change. Hopefully I can remember to take pictures and write down the recipes in the early hours though.

Why yes, they were delicious and very filling.

Burger Buns

Burger Buns by Custom Taste
With our current burger craze we needed something to put the patties in, at least half of the time anyway. So I made these on the fly. The don't have salt in them which I know many bakers will probably be appalled by but since I try not to use oils in my baked goods I turn to baking soda. For me baking soda helps to double the rising process, resulting in fluffier baked goods, as well as help the bread get a nice crunchy brown crust. I consider baking soda an assistance in the kitchen not.

Fiesta Burgers

Fiesta Burgers by Custom Taste

We have been on a huge burger kick lately. I don't know if it is because it is spring so that makes it grilling season, or that I want warm weather so badly I have come to think that the more burgers I make nature will get its act together. Whatever the case, the weather is still cold (I am in Central Texas mind you, so 60 degrees is cold!). Don't get me wrong, I do love cold weather just not when it lasts for nearly 9 months! Now that that is out, let me tell you about this new burger recipe. Mr. Custom Taste, and myself, was getting tired of the usual onions, meat, etc to keep the burgers moist, so I began rummaging through the pantry/fridge. We keep pickled jalapeños on hand, at all times (Central Texas, remember?) so seeing them made a lightbulb go off in my head. I used them to keep the burgers moist instead of onions and also added some tex-mex spices to change up the burger routine. They are great, and not overwhelming. I think they are a pretty good idea if you ask me.

We love the pickled carrot, jalapeno, and onions you can get at taquerias, so we decided to make our own! I believe this would be jalapenos escabeche since there are more jalapenos than carrots or onions. Let me know if you think it is a different term, we spent half an hour researching the name. Also, look for our recipe in the coming weeks!

Extra Creamy Shrimp Pasta Salad

Extra Creamy Shrimp Pasta Salad by Custom Taste
This is definitely one of our more decadent recipes, but oh so worth it! Plus we don't buy avocados much and with it being Cinco de Mayo we whipped up something for the day and something fresh. Oh boy is this fresh and a great nutrition loaded meal or side. All of the ingredients are best fresh, but you could use frozen shrimp if you needed to, also you could buy guacamole as well. This is a great dish to bring to any warm weather gathering, it is also quick to make and can be made ahead of time. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Quick late afternoon snack! Greek yogurt, honey, dried fruit with flax meal all stirred together with a banana. Great for keeping energy high without ruining your appetite come dinner time.

Also, I got a new phone! I wanted to play with the camera effects.

Mr. Custom Taste had to work earlier than normal this morning so I was up, but not really. I made these pancakes about a week ago and put them into the freezer. I will be posting the recipe soon! They are easy and super loaded with healthy fiber. I topped them with some plain greek yogurt and honey and drank some coffe, which is rare, but it was really early for me!

Mister Burgers

Mister Burgers by Custom Taste
First off, I rarely eat beef, if ever. Secondly, the reason behind the name "mister burgers" is because Mr. Custom Taste eats beef and wanted a really meaty burger, but did not want patties that were really thick. So I came up with these! They are a mixture of ground turkey and ground beef so that they have a very meaty flavour and texture but are also on the light side. He loved them and since they are fridge and freezer friendly he gets one whenever he needs added meat or wants a burger.
