Easy Pico De Gallo

This is super easy and yummy to make. All of the ingredients (minus the cilantro) are staples in our kitchen so this is an easy recipe for us to whip up for a healthy topping on burgers, salads, or tacos. It also helps to brighten up bean burger, something very important for me since eating bean burgers a lot can get kind of tasteless and bland.

You may be thinking "Brake? What does this cake looking thing have to do with stopping?". Well the answer is nothing. This "brake" got it's name because it tastes like a sweet bread but has the texture of a cake, pretty sweet huh? It is filling, not too sweet and a perfect treat for breakfast or an after workout snack. Plus you can always throw it together whenever your bananas get too brown to eat by themselves.

Spicy Tomato Bean Sauce

Spicy Tomato Bean Sauce by Custom Taste
I have been on a spicy kick as of late and we picked up some siracha sauce on out last grocery shopping excursion so it has been on and in almost everything since we got it. Since I went meatless, a little over a week ago, I always looking for healthy ways to add extra protein to meals and snacks. I made a simple bean paste using my slow cooker the other day and it has been my go to protein addition. I made mine a black bean paste since black beans are considered a complete protein (they have all the amino acids needed for healthy muscles) and going meatless you need to make sure you keep up with complete proteins. This sauce it super quick and super versatile, plus who can't tell it has black beans in it so it is perfect for sneaking into a picky eaters meal.

June Surprise Recipe Swap

It is that time of the month again, time for Surprise Recipe Swap! For those of you just tuning in, on the 20th of each month myself and many other bloggers participate in a Surprise Recipe Swap with is hosted by Jutta over at Hungry Little Girl. At the beginning of the month we receive our blogging partner. Throughout the month we have to choose an original recipe by them, make it for ourselves, document it and post it! If you would like to start participating in the SRS as well follow this link and let Jutta know!
June Surprise Recipe Swap: Peanut Sauced Rotini and Broccoli by Custom Taste
This month I was paired up with Amber from Dessert Now, Dinner Later. She is a culinary graduate, wife, and mother and has some pretty interesting and unique recipes. She also does a lot of drink recipes which look and sound delicious, however I chose a dinner recipe of hers. Peanut Sauced Linguini and Broccoli, except I used rotini since Mr. Custom Taste is not the biggest fan of stringy pasta (no idea why!). However, Mr. Custom Taste and myself are pretty big on anything asian related and anything peanut related so this was a perfect fit for us. I also enjoyed it for the fact that you can add meat to it if you like. As you know I am not eating meat but my other half is, so this recipe was great for its versatility

The Meatless Lifestyle 06/13/13

They always say better late than never, right? This is from my first day as a meatless eater. It took me awhile to get this up because I only have about 1 hour to 2 hours a day to work while Little Guy naps. So not only to I have to work on the blog but also do my workout, take a quick shower, and get some quick cleaning in. Little Guy helps me with the cleaning, but if you are around small children often you know that it is just be faster to do it yourself. Hope these posts help any of you out there looking to be meatless or looking for any "Meatless Monday" meal ideas!

Brined and Oven Baked Pork Butt

Brined and Oven Baked Pork Butt by Custom Taste
So about a week ago I was looking at all of my most popular posts and one happened to be a pork recipe we did in the very beginning, so I decided it was time for another one. Since I am not the meat connoisseur  I had to ask Mr. Custom Taste what his thoughts were on doing another pork shoulder. Obviously his thoughts were "yes, right now".  We did the grocery shopping and selected a fine specimen brought it home and got to cooking. This one we did an overnight brine and it turned out delicious  We also wanted to get the flavour light and summery so the we did an herb rub. Break open the oven, it is time for roasting!

Update: What Has Been Going On.

Hi everyone!
If you have noticed I have been pretty absent or irregular this past month, sorry about that. It was super busy. My Father and (now)Bonus Mother were in town from Vietnam, so the majority of my time was spent hanging out with them. It was very busy with going out to eat, baseball games, shopping and a wedding, but we had a great time. I did get to learn how to make Pelmeni (sort of like a Russian Ravioli) from my Bonus Mom and I am looking forward to making my own fillings.

While they were here I also celebrated my 25th birthday, which was great since my Father has been in Vietnam for the previous birthdays. We went to a great local sports bar/restaurant for dinner and drinks with grandparents. My 25th birthday drink was VERY different from my 21st that is for sure.

My father left on the 4th of this month and almost immediately afterwards Mr. Custom Taste and I started to completely rearrange our apartment. We just renewed our lease for another 14 months so we wanted to give the apartment a change to keep it interesting. We are also in the process of getting ready for Mr. Custom Taste's little (my bonus son) to come visit for the summer, so that has kept me plenty busy with organizing, rearranging, cleaning and planning. Just so you all know whenever I mention "Little Guy" that is who I am referring too.

Lastly, Mr. Custom Taste and I are getting ready to get really healthy. We started the diet portion of this plan this past Monday and it has been going great. We are using to help us keep on track of what we are eating since we are going for a low fat and low(simple)sugar diet. I try not to pay too much attention to calories but with that thing I don't want to get in the red so I work-out so I can eat more. I truly am a fat-kid at heart, but nothing wrong with working out everyday. I have also decided to go meatless.

I want to take some time to explain what I mean when I say meatless. I will not be eating any chicken, turkey, duck, cow, or pig (that one is proving to be the hardest so far, I love me some pulled pork). However, I will continue to eat limited quantities of seafood maybe once a week. So for those of you who practice meatless mondays or want to go meatless (even vegetarian) I will be TRYING to keep a diary of what I eat everyday and hopefully get some pictures as well. Each post that is referring to my meatless ways will be titled "The Meatless Lifestyle". Mr CT and Little Guy will continue to eat meat but will be partaking in Meatless Mondays.

Now I just want to cover this topic, I am not a vegetarian or pescatarian or any other type of -tarian. I am only going meatless. This means I will still be eating eggs, some dairy (yogurt, butter and goat's milke until our powder runs out and then I am nixing the milke) and limited cheese. All will be organic and natural of course.  I am doing this for health and to help save us money. I never really enjoyed meat to being with and anytime I have cut back on eating animal protein my body works better and I feel much more alert. I guess my ancestors weren't big meat eaters, huh?

Anywhoozles that is the end of this month's update. I might start to get one in every month, but who knows! Hope you lovely people have enjoyed my blog thus far and wil continue to enjoy it, I know I have loved doing this.
Thanks for any and all support and lovely comments!

Easy Peanut Butter Topping

Easy Peanut Butter Topping by Custom Taste
This easy and lean on topping recipe is one of my favorites, especially after a work out. It is protein loaded and all other good-for-your body nutrients and it is light so we won't get full on it or be weighed down. Not to mention that is super quick and super easy!

Strawberry Chocolate Cupcakes

Strawberry Chocolate Cupcakes by Custom Taste
I whipped these cupcakes up as a treat for my Father's intimate wedding this past month. With strawberries being on sale almost everywhere in Austin I also decided to use them as a mid-bite surprise.  They were fluffy and super easy to make as well as can be eaten for breakfast or as a dessert. Top with Strawberry Cream Cheese Topping and you have a great guilt-free treat!

With the cost of strawberries being low this time of year I have been using them a bunch in baking and cooking. This recipe I used for a topping on Chocolate Strawberry Cupcakes that I made for my Father as a treat for his wedding (the recipe will be posted shortly). This topping also doubles as a spread or fruit dip, you could also add more yogurt for a yummy snack.

And we're back!!!

Hi everyone! So sorry for the erratic posting (or none there of). We had a super busy month. My father and (now)bonus mom were in the country (they live in Vietnam), so we were spending as time with them as possible. We had their wedding, my birthday and a lot of running around. Mr. Custom Taste and I also changed up our apartment so keep things fresh since we just started our 2nd year rental agreement. Now that my parents have left and things are getting back to normal I will be posting a ton of stuff from this past month. Recipes, photos, new tricks I learned and much more! I better get to work, so here is a picture of my pretty birthday flowers!
